A book lover’s afternoon in Chatswood: Manga, multilingual reads and coffee

Start with manga and Japanese-language books at Kinokuniya, stop nearby for coffee and cake, then continue to Chatswood Library for a longer read.

Start with manga at Kinokuniya

Kinokuniya’s Chatswood branch brings Japanese and Chinese titles together with Australian and international literature, manga and children’s books. The East Asian selection gives this stop its particular appeal: alongside Japanese manga, there are translated Korean manhwa and Chinese manhua, offering a way to explore comics beyond a familiar series. Japanese- and Chinese-language sections also make it worth visiting if you want to read in those languages.

Start with the shelves that interest you most, then leave time for something adjacent—a light novel, a translated comic or an author you haven’t read. If you’re continuing a series, bring the volume number and preferred language to help narrow the search.

You won’t need to leave the floor for the coffee break. Black Star Pastry sits near Kinokuniya on Level 5, making it a convenient pause before heading to The Concourse. Its Strawberry Watermelon Cake combines almond dacquoise, rose-scented cream and watermelon, topped with strawberries, pistachios and dried rose petals. Order a slice with coffee, or try the Cinnamon Cloud Cold Brew for a sweeter drink.

Leave time to read at Chatswood Library

Continue to Chatswood Library on the lower ground level of The Concourse. With study space and free Wi-Fi, it gives the afternoon somewhere to settle after the browsing and coffee.

Willoughby’s library service maintains American, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean collections. Check the catalogue for the location and availability of a particular book, or ask staff about reading in another language: the service can request a free bulk loan of mixed titles from elsewhere, while requests for a specific book through inter-library loan attract a fee. That makes the library useful beyond whatever happens to be on the shelves during your visit.

On weekends, plan around the library’s 5pm closing time. If you’re starting late, reverse the route and visit the library first; Kinokuniya and Black Star Pastry currently trade until 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
